Prefixes and Prefix Strategy Unit

 
  Lesson 1

Before learning about the Prefix Strategy, students must understand the concept of prefixes and know some prefix meanings. In Lesson 1, students learn the basic facts about prefixes and why prefixes are important. They deduce the meaning of the prefixes inter- and en- through a teacher-led exercise and then cement their knowledge by completing an activity sheet.


  Lesson 2

The emphasis in Lesson 2 is on the Prefix Strategy. Students learn about the strategy and then work in pairs to apply the strategy to unknown words on an activity sheet.

 
 
 
  Lesson 3

In Lesson 3, students work in groups of three to review and learn about two more prefixes: mis- and de-. Students use the Group Discussion Cards to guide their learning. Each student takes a turn as the group leader. To reinforce their knowledge, the trio works together on a crossword puzzle.

  Lesson 4

Lesson 4 is review day. During the first part of class, the teacher leads the class in a review of prefix meanings and the Prefix Strategy. During the latter part of the class, students independently practice the Prefix Strategy on unknown words beginning with the prefixes mis- and de-.
